WeaponsOkay, I admit, I spend a lot of time thinking about weapons! <g> So I thought I'd kick this forum off with a couple of my very favorite finds. First off is this selection of videos, posted by the Royal Armouries on YouTube. They've got historical tidbits on everything from the history of the longbow, to cavalry swords, to jousting. Really cool! And my must-have web site is MyArmoury.com. They are a wonderful and gracious community of weapons experts and collectors who have talked me through everything from firing black powder weapons to the nature of James Graham's broadsword. Love it!! Added May 19th, 2008 by veronica

Great sites, Veronica. I also recommend www.scotpress.com They have a ton of old books on CDs--including "Ancient Scottish Weapons" and "Highland Targets and Shields" with extant pictures.

ooh, thanks--good site! Here's where I say, for the record, that I think Monica does some of the best and most thorough research around! :) Can you point us to those awesome maps you use?

Though...oops...I suppose I should've started a new sub-topic for that question! I'm still getting the hang of my own forums. :)

Thanks so much!!

A site I've found useful is www.doverpublications.com
They offer reissue and public domain books that are very useful for historical information. I especially love the coloring books. Three of my favorties are "Everyday Dress of the American Colonial Period" and "Early American Trades" and "Early American Crafts and Occupations"
Lots of information and whats easier to understnad than a coloring book for basic ionformation! I found this tip and site in Diana Gabaldon's "Outlandish Companion".

Hi Michele, What a brilliant idea--thanks so much for sharing! I read "Outlandish Companion" a while back, but had somehow missed that one. I have a couple Scottish kids' history books for that very reason!

May I ask what the Scottish kids books are and where did you get them?
Thanks!!!

Hi Sarah! Apologies on taking a couple days to respond. We moved this summer and, believe it or not, I finally finished unpacking my books just last week. After much ado, it turns out the name of the book I used was "The History of Scotland for Children." LOL...you'd think I could've remembered that one off the top of my head! Anyway, I got it on my first trip to Scotland, mostly to help me wrap my head around the whole Jacobite era, the players and twists and turns of which have dogged me in the past. I'm also a huge fan of the Eyewitness Books, which you can get in any bookstore. I often find them in used bookstores, in fact, and in libraries too. They're also kid books, but I have versions of them on weapons, on castle life, on the middle ages, on costume... I love them, and love the pictures! It's a great way to get the creative juices flowing, looking at the photos and reading quick snippets of facts.

I am happy to hear you are finally settled in!! The move itself can be fun and exciting, but the packing is what stinks, so I am glad you finally got it done.
Thank you for responding to my question. I think I will head out to the library and see what I can come up with. My library is ver goo dabout getting something for me if they don't have it. Poor ladies know me by name now!!!

Definitely give the library a shot. I recommend those kids' Eyewitness Books. The pictures alone are good for getting ideas...
